Happy Birthday Special Relativity!
Well, today is Special Relativity’s 100 year anniversary! Yup, 100 years ago today, June 30, 1905, Einstein published “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies”.
Beyond the now famous discovery of the interrelatedness of mass, momentum, and energy, this seminal paper helped us understand space-time in a way in which had never been considered from both a geometric and a philosophical perspective (Simultaneity and Causality).
It was a sad day for Newton, a good day for Einstein (Relatively Speaking), and the dawn of a new age for the rest of the world. Perhaps this paper wasn’t as fun as “Spooky Action at a Distance“, but it was certainly light years ahead of it’s time (pun absolutely intended).
Tune in this November, when we celebrate the 70th birthday of Erwin Schrödinger’s Cat, as well as the publication of his paper, “The Present Situation in Quantum Mechanics.”
